I submitted a request to the NARA for copies of his military records and was told that they were destroyed in a fire in 1968 and was directed to the VA for assistance. I received a copy of his Enlisted Service Record. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 in Los Angeles, CA. He attended radio operator’s school in Madison Wisconsin. He was in Naples Foggia Campaign. Was a radio operator/mech. He had an aircrew member badge (wings). He was discharged in Dec 1945 from March AFB, Riverside Ca. On his honorable discharge papers it reads discharged from 556th AAF BU. If there is anyone who served with my father or new of him please contact me. I would be most grateful.

Then in the 305th 422nd Squadron at Chelveston, City of Rhusden March 20th 1944. Then back to Grafton-Underwood in the 384th 544th Squadron. Flew 32 missions total. 25 was normal but due to the invasion they "encouraged" me to continue on for 7 more missions. Those seven missions were closer to England, mostly in France. . Left England 10, July 1944 on the S.S. Maratania to Fort Hamilton (New York?)

I volunteered at the WWII Memorial Dedication in May and it was an unforgetable experience. (Carol: I will get photos to you soon!) We expected 120,000 visitors; average age 83; 75% were WWII vets. I helped at the handicapped seating area that had a portable floor. Well, needless to say, chairs were rearranged and the handicapped area turned into a dance floor! They were turning our "solemn occasion" into a party! The day was beautiful, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Thanks again to all vets who served and who are now serving. God bless all of you!

Comments:Wonderful site! I found your site while looking for pictures of B-17's. I recently had made a comemerative poster dedicated to my grandfather(and the brave men who flew these missions) who passed away 10 years ago when i was 15. He was a top flight instuctor at Roswell Army Air field aka Walker Air Force Base in Nevada. I'm hunting down more stories of his service instructing piolets who would later become decorated heros. I did hear a story of him flunking out an aspiring piolet who was engaged to Shirly Temple the actress. The psoter I made while I worked for a graphic design company turned out great. I would be happy to email an image of it to you and you can decide if it fits anywhere into your web site. I'm not sure what kind of research sources you have but my grandfathers name was Lt. I HAVE THOUGHT OF SELLING THE "LIBERATED SQUARE METER" WITH MY PERSONAL INVOLVMENT AS FOLLOWS: a) I should have a mass said each year until 2014, in my church, in CHERBOURG- b) my family should authorize each owner of a bit of that French soil to draw some photos I took of these lands and so U could see your private SQ. Comments:Enlisted July, 1942, Pilot class 43G, ended up as flight instructor age 20. Great to read of the exploits of those fine young men. Even though I never saw combat I felt that I was doing my part in training and hope I did a good job. Stayed active and reserve and retired in 1982, 40 years 3 days service. We all had something to do, and hopefully did it very best way. Jack Northrup, Major, USAF, Retired.

He just told me he NEVER got that so have contacted his congressman and HE WILL GET IT!! Scott would never have asked for it..these brave MEN are such an inspiration..Men were MEN in those days!!! I have a new friend who served in the USAAF, 547th BS, 384th BG. He is reaching the end of his life and I feel a need to preserve his war memories for his posterity and all of ours. Although many vets do not want to talk about their war experiences, I feel great lessons will be lost if we do not ask. Please continue to express interest. I feel that as these veterans reach the end of their lives, many may be finally ready to share those experiences, if we would only ask. I saw some very proud 80-something fellows at the new WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. over this July 4 weekend. I wanted to go to each and say "thank you", and "I don't mean to intrude, but could you please share a memory or two?" My son, who is in the Army, may be deployed this fall to the fighting. I feel the experiences of our veterans may be of help to our soldie

I am still very interested in the B-17 and the men who flew these planes. And that is why I wanted to ask you a question! Do you think people are interested in your lives...Before, during and after the war? I am very interested in how many of you lived! who you guys were, what you did before the war, why you decided to fly on a B-17, how your time was during WWII, your lives during combat...on base, how your lives were when you returned! How did your family react...what did you do when returning home? Did you party...or did you go back to your normal lives! This is an idea for a book. So people can not only read about yo

These men were prepared to sacrifice everything, and many did, to achieve freedom for ALL people. I hope that this informative and moving website educates those who are ignorant to this fact, and that as a result they realise that we all have a duty to live our lives the very best we can to honour their sacrifices for our freedom. Comments:My father, MSgt John H. Hearne, USAF Retired is still with us and is 85 years young. He lives in Sacramento, CA with my mother, the former Virginia Mabel Morton, both of Albemarle, N.C. Dad was a ball turret gunner with the 547th Bomb Squadron at RAF Grafton-Underwood. He served over 30 years with the USAF,retired, went to the U.C. at Sacramento and received his B.A. and taught school for the next five years. I see my mom and dad once a week when I assist them in their shopping at the McClellan AFB exchange and commissary. They both do not drive anymore and are dependent on my brother Joe, he lives in Livermore, CA, and I to get them around town. I would like to hear from anyone who served with the 547th at G.U. 1944 to 1945. Dad was in the "pool" and flew with many different crews and aircraft. He speaks often about the missions on the B-17G "Damn Yankee". Pleae email me or telephone me at: (916) 486-0752. Semper Fi! Mike Hearne

The Post would like to collect stories from veterans and civilians about their experiences during the War. Submit 500 words or less by March 15. Describe your experiences; most vivid recollections; were you affected by these experiences? If you have any WWII memorabilia, describe it -- do not send it to the Post. Submit stories to WorldWarII@washpost.com. Give your name, hometown, contact phone number and e-mail. I hope to read some exciting stories from heros of the 384th!

Comments:Great site. My father was a small boy in Geddington during the time of the war and has many fond memories of that time. He and friends used to jump on their bicycles if they saw the flares go out of the returning aircraft and race up to the perimeter. I too lived in Geddington from 1965 to 1983 and with my father attended the unveiling of the memorial, that was a great day for me as one of you vets very kindly gave me your 384th BG pin badge which I still cherish to date. I have a great collection of 8th AF memorabilia and books and spend many nights reading them over and over again. Am also very proud to wear my A2 with 384th insigia.

Comments:My dad is Peter T. Yaskow. He was a tail gunner in b17's. 384th bomb group.546 squadron. He was at Grafton Underwood. He flew in a plane called-Little America when Jim Kelly was the pilot. He also flew in other planes. Black Ghost, and others. I absolutely love this site and am so excited to tell dad about it and show him. I just HAVE to try to get a copy of the picture on this site when all the guys are standing on and in front of the plane!!! It brought tears to my eyes- it is the best picture I have ever run into. My dad lost alot of his pictures and info in a house fire so I am trying to do this research for him.Thank-you for this site-just fabulous!!!

Comments:Would love to hear from anyone who knew my father, Howard W. Cole, who was pilot of a B-17 in the spring of 1944. I have some pictures of him and friends and crewmembers. He never talked about his experiences to me, his daughter, except one time when I "interviewed" him for a school paper, but I have a few stories told to me by some relatives and letters he wrote to Mother. Does anyone know just which missions he flew? Which plane was theirs? In a letter to Rex Blackburn he mentions flying "Old Nan". Does anyone know which plane that was? Thank you. Blessings on all who gave so much for our country and the freedoms we enjoy today!

Comments:Hi My name is Richard Ellis and I was born at Grafton lodge farm in 1935 and the house and farm buildings were knocked down [ I think the main runway covered the actual site although the cowmans cottages remained throughout the war } to make way for the airfield. I was one of the few who used to cross the airfield { with my father] to get to some land that he still farmed.I have never forgotten the kindness of the American service men.{Milk chocolate ,peanuts ,sweets and of course the gum. I would like to thank you all for helping us out in our hours of need. Then and now --although some over here in the U.K. seem to forget. By the way I came past the old airfield tonight passing through the village of Brigstock, that I am sure some of the crews remember. Great site Thanks Dick
